It's not a disregard of everything that is wrong, missing, not where or how you want it to be, yet. It's not a disregard of the frustration. The older people, could have had wonderful careers, and lovely homes. But, perhaps they had endured a catastrophic physical or emotional traumatic, life altering event.

Rather than judging, go through your things and bring them a blanket, extra clothing, and bring them some food.
