When Jack eventually died, God found him unsavory
so denied him entry into Heaven, and the Devil denied him entry into Hell. Instead, Jack was forced to roam the Earth with only a piece of burning coal which he put into a carved-out turnip. So he was known as "Jack of the Lantern", later simply "Jack O'Lantern".
