Organized religion is an example of a good idea gone bad. Unlike the other primates, we are able to reflect on our existence, even to imagine that, unlike them, we ourselves are not a part of the natural world, not a part of the universe. The goal of religion was to have been to halt that fantastic egoism by teaching that we are part of a greater reality and subject to a higher authority. The irony is that the teachings themselves have been employed by many in the service of the same egoism they were intended to restrain while the goal itself has been all but forgotten. Ecce homo.
