the function of the sacrificial lamb in biblical times is performed by (1) the child selected to be the black sheep of the family, and (2) those who are on welfare: to be accepted as evidence that their oppressors are the embodiment of all that is good, while they themselves exemplify what is not.

the function of the black sheep in the modern family is that of the sacrificial lamb in biblical times, and of the working class in the capitalist system: to silently attest to the sanctity of those who enjoy authority, whether deservedly or not.
