The jester was once an important member of many a royal court. Though on the surface he appeared to be a fool, his skill with humor often made him the only person who could speak awkward truths that would get anyone else killed. He provided a critical pressure release valve for a kingdom's subjects.
The king needed to have a thick skin, however, and be secure enough to laugh along with him.
