What if this chain of existence and incarnations or 'whatever' is a constantly rising and widening spiral, and the learnings although repeated happen on a higher level each cycle or turn of the spiral?
And if so, maybe at some level we finally learn and take to heart and live the lesson: that there is no need for greed or wars or hunger or sickness or suffering, that we all are one, and this notion of separation, of there being an "other" outside and separate from "ourselves," is simply that,
