If I can be faithful to my own gifts - what I possess, what's within my reach as a human being. If I can be faithful to the needs around me by keeping my eyes and ears open, listening and looking with care. And if I can be faithful to where my gifts intersect the needs of the world... then I think I can check out at the end of the road with some sense of satisfaction that I showed up in my own life as fully as I knew how...

I realized that if I kept measuring myself with outcomes ... I would die in despair, if effectiveness was my only measure. I asked myself about my heroes who had been assassinated - Dr. King of course - was he able to die saying "I'm sure glad I devoted my life to love, truth, and justice, because now everyone in the world can check it off their to-do list now and forever?" Is that kind of effectiveness available if we devote ourselves to values of that sort? The answer is clearly no.

I don't think effectiveness is the right measure. I think faithfulness is the right measure. Are you being faithful to your values? And by that measure, you're doing well.

Because when we are free from hate, we see the ones who hurt us not as monsters, but as people who themselves are wounded, who themselves feel threatened, who don't know what else to do with their insecurity but to hurt us, to pull the trigger, or cast the vote, or pass the policy aimed at us. But if some of us begin to wonder about them, listen even to their stories, we learn that participation in oppression comes at a cost. It cuts them off from their own capacity to love.

This is a good day for hope, for whatever of America's best ideals might survive this administration, if any do.
But the daily gaslighting; the day-to-day wagon-circling; the hateful, aggressive, reactionary Trump-culture is exhausting. The contempt with which Republican leaders talk about the “Democrat party,” the refusal to play by any rules of decency and shared society, the constant dirty tricks, smears, and open embrace of cruelty towards so many different people on the margins. I'm so terrified of my fellow Americans, somewhere between 35 and 45 percent of them.

The whole thing where Republicans won't say the name "Democratic" and instead refer to "the Democrat party" with a note of disgust in their voice is a mini-version of Trump's constant eruptions of put-downs, insults, ridicule, and intentionally mis-naming people to deny them the basic respect one person owes to another. I am a Democrat and I belong to the Democratic Party. If you can't say my name and say it with respect, leave me alone. I'm only willing to talk with people who treat me and the people I associate with with respect.

When powerful grown-ups call people names and ridicule them in public, over and over again, they teach our children that this is okay. ( ! )

When religious leaders call these powerful grown-ups "instruments of God's will" they make a mockery out of genuine faith, which knows no impulse to mock people, and only seeks to open the heart.

You know what the Torah doesn't say?

"You shall build a wall to shut out the stranger. Harden your hearts and mistreat their children. Your nation will become great by not caring if people are desperate refugees, not caring if they have fled horrible violence, and by looking for ways to keep them from approaching you in the future. You do not have any moral obligation to people who have risked their lives to come to your gates to plead for mercy and shelter. Thus says the Eternal your God."

(I'm not an expert on other religions, but I'm pretty sure Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha, etc didn't say that either.)

For the Eternal your God is ... the great, the mighty, and the awesome God, who shows no favor and takes no bribe, but upholds the cause of the orphan and the widow, and loves the stranger, providing them with food and clothing. You too must love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt” (Deut. 10:17-19).

Saying that God has a political party is wrong and dangerous.

Publicly attacking people from a position of power is not leadership.

The simplicities of bigotry don't help us.

God works through imperfect instruments - namely, all of us - when we act with compassion, generosity, & justice. What God doesn't do is manifest in the world through cruelty, lying, bullying, ridicule, hatred, environmental destruction, or greed. Those behaviors are not godly - they're the ways people bring harm and misery into the world.

Humility is a virtue and a leadership quality.

Saying things to divide and isolate people is not the way.

Being mean is not strength.

When the fantasy they think is unfolding doesn't come to pass, what happens to their churches, their self-appointed holy men, their understanding of the world? Because the truth is that the world is not coming to an end. This isn't the final chapter of human history. We may damage the ecosystem in a way that kills most of us off, but we are not about to witness the "End Times" as imagined in any holy book or religious script. What we're living through is delusional religion riding on the back of narcissistic madness in power. How long will it go on, and at what point will people who have hitched themselves to it start to get disillusioned and disappointed?

We can overcome greed. We can overcome hate. We can overcome cold-heartedness. We can overcome the denial of our country's true purpose: E Pluribus Unum / Out of Many, One.

Racism isn't patriotism.

The craziness can't hold forever. It can dominate and destroy for a while but it's got a flimsy foundation. It's going to collapse at some point, like a hot fever finally breaking.

People have a habit of insulting strangers and belittling them. God therefore warns us not to think that such a stranger has no one who takes up their complaints. The Eternal One will fight their fight for them. The Torah reminds us that we of all people should have empathy for strangers seeing we had been taken advantage of in Egypt because we were strangers.
