If I can be faithful to my own gifts - what I possess, what's within my reach as a human being. If I can be faithful to the needs around me by keeping my eyes and ears open, listening and looking with care. And if I can be faithful to where my gifts intersect the needs of the world... then I think I can check out at the end of the road with some sense of satisfaction that I showed up in my own life as fully as I knew how...

I realized that if I kept measuring myself with outcomes ... I would die in despair, if effectiveness was my only measure. I asked myself about my heroes who had been assassinated - Dr. King of course - was he able to die saying "I'm sure glad I devoted my life to love, truth, and justice, because now everyone in the world can check it off their to-do list now and forever?" Is that kind of effectiveness available if we devote ourselves to values of that sort? The answer is clearly no.
