About Smiling Gecko

What's going on in the heads and hearts of people?

Think freely - how you would portrait the impact of Smiling Gecko.

Our lives are
often swallowed
by our experience,
so fight hard, stay strong
and don't become
the things you suffer.

Trying to describe what you feel is like taking a picture of the moon with the mobile....

         If your blessings
         come at the price
         of my soul, then
         I can live without it.
The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it.

About Smiling Gecko

Since the middle of the last century, Cambodia has been ravaged by decades of civil war and suffered terribly during the Vietnam war and the terror regime of the Khmer Rouge. As a consequence, Cambodia is now one of the poorest countries in the world. In its capital Phnom Penh alone, tens of thousands of children live on the streets, suffering hunger, illness and abuse. To provide these children and their families with a life in decency, we need to provide help on the ground.

In recent years, Smiling Gecko has been able to do a lot of good through their projects. Apart from providing direct aid and supporting other NGOs, Smiling Gecko focuses on fighting the causes of poverty and helping people to help themselves. In the meantime, Smiling Gecko Cambodia has developed into a social start-up company, based on six intertwined pillars (agriculture, production, trade, industry and tourism, as well as education) that should contribute to a self-sustaining unit in the mid-term future.

Contrary to most conventional NGOs, Smiling Gecko pursues a holistic approach with the cluster project, which leads to a sustainable improvement of the living conditions within a community. Already in the beginning of 2014, the vision is to expand Smiling Gecko as a holistic cluster project. Since then, many areas of work and training could be created in agriculture, tourism, crafts and schooling. By 2025, many additional projects in the field of industry and crafts will follow. Due to the economic orientation of the cluster projects, they will be self-supporting and can finance the school and thus the education of the children. This creates an exemplary model of a functioning, rural community, which provides education, decent work and sustainable income to the people.
